Introduction
It's no secret that the fashion industry is one of the world's most polluting industries. The production of synthetic fabrics, such as polyester, requires a lot of energy and results in the release of harmful toxins into the environment.
In an effort to reduce our impact on the planet, more and more people are turning to sustainable materials like hemp fiber. Hemp fiber is made from the Cannabis Sativa plant, which can be grown without pesticides or herbicides. What's more, it requires very little water to grow and is biodegradable.
Hemp fiber has many benefits for use in textiles. It is strong and durable, making it perfect for use in clothing and accessories. It is also absorbent and fast-drying, making it ideal for use in towels and other travel-related items.

Introducing HempCORE: a new super-soft fiber made from an ideal blend of hemp and cotton that took 3 years and hundreds of prototypes to develop. HempCORE is perfect for use in FiveADRIFT's line of turkish towels - lightweight, anti-microbial, super absorbent and fast-drying.
How FiveADRIFT makes beach towels with HempCORE
The Turkish towel is a lightweight, absorbent and fast-drying towel that is perfect for use at the beach or pool. FiveADRIFT's line of Turkish towels are made from HempCORE yarn, which is made from hemp fiber and woven in Turkey using traditional methods that are centuries old and are still in use today. The warp is the vertical thread that is stretched on the loom, while the weft is the horizontal thread that is woven through the warp. The weaver must be able to weave both the warp and the weft at the same time, which requires a lot of skill and time - it can take several days to weave a single Turkish towel. However, the results are well worth the effort, as turkish towels are some of the most durable and absorbent towels on the market.
Why did we choose hemp?
The environmental benefits of using sustainable materials like hemp fiber are numerous. Hemp fiber is made from the Cannabis Sativa plant, which can be grown without pesticides or herbicides. What's more, it requires very little water to grow and is biodegradable.

What's more, the production of hemp fiber does not release harmful toxins into the environment like the production of synthetic fabrics does. In fact, hemp fiber can even be used to clean up soil pollution!
So why not switch to hemp fiber? It's environmentally friendly, durable and absorbent - what's not to love?
Natural Fibers + Giveback
In addition to being made with all natural fibers, did you know that every FiveADRIFT Turkish towel sold stops 500 plastic bottles from reaching the sea? For each towel we sell, we partner with with organizations around the world to stop 500 bottles worth ocean bound plastic. These organizations pay for people to collect and remove plastic. The plastic is then recycled into other items.
Beyond the towel - more ways to make environmentally conscious clothing decisions
When shopping for clothes and accessories, there are many ways to be more environmentally conscious. Here are a few tips:
- Choose natural materials over synthetic materials whenever possible. It requires very little water to grow and is biodegradable.
- Look for clothing and accessories made from recycled materials. There are many companies that make clothing and accessories from recycled materials, such as recycled plastic bottles or recycled cotton.
- Avoid purchasing items that are made in sweatshops. Many clothing brands use sweatshops in developing countries to produce their clothing. The workers in these factories are often paid very low wages and are subjected to poor working conditions.
- Opt for Fairtrade certified items. Fairtrade certification ensures that workers in developing countries are treated fairly and receive a fair wage.
- Wash polyester clothing in a mesh bag. A mesh bag is a bag made from a net-like material that allows water to flow through it and acts like the lint filter in your dryer. This prevents microplastics from entering the waste water stream and harming marine life.
